About Rock Creek Fishing

Rock Creek is a pristine wild tributary of the Clark Fork located east of Missoula, prized for its exceptional water quality and minimal development that has preserved its character as a genuine backcountry fishery. The river's roadside access throughout its scenic canyon makes world-class trout fishing accessible without requiring a backcountry trek, and the water's clarity and health support robust populations of all four Montana trout species.

Best Time to Fish Rock Creek

Rock Creek's most famous feature is its exceptional salmonfly hatch, which peaks in late May and June, drawing anglers from across the region to fish large stonefly patterns during this prolific emergence. Outside the salmonfly season, consistent mayfly and caddis hatches provide year-round opportunities, with spring and fall offering excellent dry fly fishing when crowds thin and water conditions stabilize.

Species

Rock Creek holds brown trout and rainbow trout as its dominant species, with both responding aggressively to properly presented dry flies and nymphs throughout the season. The river's cold, clean water also supports populations of cutthroat trout and the rare bull trout, making Rock Creek one of the few Montana rivers where anglers have a genuine chance to encounter all four species on a single outing.

Access & Regulations

Always check the current Montana fishing regulations before heading out. Regulations on Rock Creek may include special catch-and-release sections, artificial-only stretches, and seasonal closures. A valid Montana fishing license is required.

Live River Data

Trout Bible pulls live flow and gauge data directly from the USGS National Water Information System. Current CFS (cubic feet per second) and gauge height readings are updated every 15โ€“60 minutes, giving you the most accurate picture of conditions before you make the drive.
