Palisade Campground
Palisade Campground is one of the most productive and accessible wade fishing sections on the upper Rio Grande, sitting between Wagon Wheel Gap and South Fork along Highway 149. Towering pine trees line the banks and the river widens into classic riffle and run structure holding strong populations of brown and rainbow trout. Public access makes this a reliable destination with less pressure than the more well-known sections upstream near Creede.
๐Ÿ’ง Ideal flow: 300โ€“700 CFS. The Palisade section fishes best at moderate flows โ€” high enough to keep fish active and distributed throughout the runs but low enough for safe wading along the banks.

Bristol Head Area
Above Creede near Bristol Head the upper Rio Grande originates from high mountain terrain with excellent wild brown and cutthroat trout. Colorado River cutthroat still persist in some upper tributaries making this historically significant. The remote headwaters offer exceptional scenery and quality fishing.
๐Ÿ’ง Ideal flow: 200โ€“500 CFS. Headwaters near Creede are smaller water โ€” fish at lower flows for the best dry fly action in the upper canyon.

About Rio Grande River Fishing

The Rio Grande River originates in Colorado's high San Juan Mountains between Creede and Silverton, flowing as the second longest river in the United States. The Gold Medal Water stretch between South Fork and Del Norte features slow-moving, meandering sections that consistently produce excellent trout fishing opportunities.

Best Time to Fish Rio Grande River

The Rio Grande's most notable hatch is the heavy salmonfly emergence occurring in mid-to-late June, attracting aggressive feeding activity throughout the Gold Medal section. Year-round stonefly abundance ensures consistent dry fly fishing, with traditional big-water patterns like the Humpy and Royal Wulff proving highly effective.

Species

Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout inhabit the Rio Grande, with fish that are notably unfussy and responsive to both classic attractor patterns and carefully matched naturals. This cooperative feeding behavior makes the Gold Medal stretch particularly rewarding for fly anglers of varying skill levels.

Access & Regulations

Always check the current Colorado fishing regulations before heading out. Regulations on Rio Grande River may include special catch-and-release sections, artificial-only stretches, and seasonal closures. A valid Colorado fishing license is required.

Live River Data

Live flow and gauge readings are sourced from the USGS National Water Information System and updated every 15โ€“60 minutes. CFS (cubic feet per second) and gauge height give you a current snapshot of river conditions before your trip.
