About Fremont River Fishing
The Fremont River originates high on Fishlake Mountain above 11,000 feet and flows through one of Utah's most remote and scenic corridors, flanked by the Boulder and Thousand Lakes Mountains as it approaches Capitol Reef National Park. The river's greatest appeal lies in its virtually unfished upper section below the damโa rugged 4-mile stretch accessible only by day pack and bushwhacking, where massive brown trout roam under zero fishing pressure.
Best Time to Fish Fremont River
Spring runoff typically peaks in May and June, making late June through September the prime fishing window when water levels stabilize and trout feeding becomes more predictable. Summer hatches of mayflies and caddisflies provide consistent dry fly opportunities throughout the middle Fremont between Bicknell and Capitol Reef.
Species
Brown trout dominate the upper and middle Fremont, with the remote section below the dam holding notably large, aggressive fish due to minimal angling pressure, while rainbows and splake thrive in the middle 20-mile stretch between the reservoirs. All three species respond well to small streamers and nymphs in the Fremont's clear, cold water, though browns in the upper section tend to be less cautious and more willing to eat larger offerings.
Access & Regulations
Always check the current Utah fishing regulations before heading out. Regulations on Fremont River may include special catch-and-release sections, artificial-only stretches, and seasonal closures. A valid Utah fishing license is required.
