Flathead River is one of Montana's premier trout fisheries, located in the Northwest Montana region. The river is well known for producing quality Cutthroat Trout and Bull Trout, drawing anglers from across the country throughout the season.

Best Time to Fish Flathead River

Fishing on Flathead River varies significantly by season. Spring runoff typically peaks between April and June, with conditions improving as flows stabilize. Summer offers excellent dry fly opportunities during morning and evening hours. Fall is prime time for larger fish as brown trout move into spawning mode. Winter fishing can be exceptional during midday midge hatches.

Species

Flathead River supports healthy populations of Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout, Rainbow Trout. The river's diverse habitat โ€” from fast riffles to deep pools โ€” provides year-round holding water for trout of all sizes.
