Top 4 Fishing Locations on Black Earth Creek
Cross Plains — Upper Headwaters
Black Earth Creek starts from cold springs just west of Madison and the upper stretch through Cross Plains is where the best water quality and highest fish densities exist. The creek begins as a small spring-fed channel in Dane County's Black Earth Creek Natural Resource Area west of Middleton. Conservation groups have worked hard to protect this stretch and it shows in the fish counts. Browns hold tight to the undercut banks and any cover they can find in clear water this cold and clean.
💧 Ideal flow: spring-fed and stable. The upper sections clear fastest after rain. Best fished early morning on warm days when fish are less spooky in the cooler water temperatures of dawn.

Village of Black Earth — Town Access
The creek runs right through the village of Black Earth and the community has actively protected and restored the streamside corridor. Access points in and near town give easy entry to good water without a long walk. This stretch sees more pressure than remote sections but fish populations are strong enough to handle it. Go early or late on weekends. The village sections can be productive during evening Hex hatches when fish come out of hiding regardless of the pressure they've been under all day.
💧 Ideal flow: town access fishes across a range of flows. The deeper runs through the village hold fish even at higher water. Evening fishing during summer hatches is the best time to find active fish near the village access points.

Highway 14 Corridor — Middle Creek Access
Highway 14 runs parallel to much of Black Earth Creek and provides the easiest access to the middle stretches. The DNR fishery area along Highway 14 offers multiple entry points to good water. The creek here has classic wooded and prairie surroundings framed by bluffs that create the Black Earth Creek valley. Browns in the middle sections average a solid size — this is where most visiting anglers end up and the fishing can be very good despite the pressure.
💧 Ideal flow: stable spring-fed conditions year-round. The Highway 14 sections are accessible even at moderate flows. After heavy rain wait a day or two — this stretch gets silty faster than the upper spring-fed headwaters.

Mazomanie — Lower Creek and Wolf Run Trail
The lower creek near Mazomanie flows into the Wisconsin River and the restored streamside corridor here includes the Wolf Run Trail connecting Wisconsin Heights School to the village. A restored section of creek with public trail access gives easy entry to lower creek water that gets less attention than the upper sections. The lower creek near Mazomanie holds good browns and the Hex hatch on summer evenings draws some of the largest fish in the system to the surface.
💧 Ideal flow: the lower creek can warm in summer if flows drop significantly. Fish earlier in the day in summer heat. The Hex hatch brings fish up regardless of conditions on the right evenings in late June and July.

About Black Earth Creek Fishing
Black Earth Creek is 27 miles of Class I wild trout water in Dane County, Wisconsin — starting from cold springs west of Madison and running through Cross Plains, the village of Black Earth, and on to Mazomanie where it enters the Wisconsin River. Trout Unlimited put it on their top 100 list. The communities along the creek have fought hard to keep it from being paved over and developed as Madison's suburban sprawl pushed west. What they protected is real. A self-sustaining brown trout fishery with no stocking that stays productive season after season. Get on the creek early in the morning before the Madison crowd arrives.
Best Time to Fish Black Earth Creek
Spring and early summer are prime. BWO hatches in April and May are reliable on overcast days and get fish rising in the middle of the afternoon, which is unusual for spring creeks. Caddis hatches run through May and June. The Hex hatch in late June and early July is the signature event. Black Earth Creek is known for it and anglers plan trips around it. Night fishing during the Hex is the best shot at the largest brown trout in the system. Summer terrestrial fishing with ants and beetles works well from July through September. Fall brings the creek back to life as temperatures drop and fish become aggressive again before winter. Mornings and evenings always outperform midday on this creek regardless of season.
Species
Exclusively brown trout. Black Earth Creek receives no stocking. Every fish in here was born in the creek. The population has bounced back from a 2001 fish kill that wiped out fish from Cross Plains to Black Earth and conservation groups have worked continuously since then to restore water quality and habitat. The creek is full of insect life and forage fish that sustain the wild brown population year-round.
Access and Regulations
The fly fishing only section from Black Earth village to Cross Plains requires artificial lures and no bait. Wisconsin trespass law allows wading navigable streams with legal access points. Primary access is along Highway 14 and County Highway KP. The Black Earth Creek Natural Resource Area west of Middleton has protected access. Check current Wisconsin DNR regulations for specific section rules, season dates, and size limits. The creek receives significant pressure given its proximity to Madison — go on weekday mornings for the best shot at solitude.
Live River Data
Streamflow data is pulled in real time from the USGS National Water Information System where available. Black Earth Creek is spring-fed and stable in the upper sections but the lower reaches can be affected by storm runoff. Give the creek a day or two to clear after heavy rain before making the drive from Madison.
